A strong Dark Mild is next on the

Occasional Chestnut coloured standard bitter with a

Our very first brew, hence the name - We were forced to be more imaginative with the later beers having used up the
obvious one on the very first brew! |
|
|

|
Lammas means "Loaf Mass" and

other things, is a fund raising event for the RNLI.
Raising money whilst drinking -
brilliant idea! |
|
|

 |
Armistice Ale
4.2% ABV |
Availability:
November Deep mahogany, full bodied but mild
drinking old style ale. |
|
The first brew to use the current season's hops
from our local hop farm in Burwash.
Brewed to raise money for the Royal
British
Legions Poppy Appeal and recognised by
them as an official fund
raiser.
OK, a recurring theme of raising money by drinking, but this one
started it and its importance should not be underestimated. |

|
 |
Ginger No. 1
4.2% ABV |
Availability:
November - March Deep amber colour, an unusual blend of smoked
malted barley and fresh root ginger creates an amazingly complex but
satisfying flavour. |
|
All depends whether you like your
consumables smoked and infused with ginger, of course!
Why Ginger Nol? Oliver Cromwell
was a red head, believe it or not, and his nickname was 'Old Nol'.
Therefore,
Ginger for the red hair,
and Nol, which means lump or
stump - loosely translated meaning head - simple!
(Yes, that is another clue to the brewery name - clues coming thick
and fast now!)
As everyone insists on calling this beer 'Ginger No. 1' we have relented and
changed the name to just that. We have also lowered the abv from 4.7% to
4.2% |

 |
Double Award
Winner
Three Threads
4.3% ABV |
Availability:
April - May
Deep brown, full bodied with
a deep, complex flavour.
|
|
Takes a bit of explaining, this
one....
An 18th Century custom for mixing
three
types (or Threads) of beer -
Mild, Pale and
Brown - into one tankard.
We have tried to achieve this in
a single brew
and not by blending three
different existing
brews.
Almost impossible to categorise,
but we call it a Mild! |

Double Award Winner
Signature
4.4% ABV |
Availability:
All Year
Very pale, light crisply refreshing ale with a
pleasing bitter back taste. |
|
We
achieved early success with this brew.
A double award winner on only its
second
brewing. (See, much more
imaginative name
and quite apt really, as it is our most popular
beer - our
Signature brew, in fact).
Name inspired by the signatures on the
'Warrant of
Execution' for Charles I which
was ratified prior to his execution in
January 1649.
(It doesn't say specifically on this website where the name 1648 Brewing
Co. ltd. comes from, but this is a clue). |

Saint George
4.5% ABV |
Availability:
April Chestnut/amber brown, traditional style, full
bodied English Ale. |
|
Brewed for Saint George's Day (you
might
have guessed that). Remember, a Patron
Saint is available every day,
not just on
23rd April (Yes, that is Saint George's Day) Saint George
will one day be available all year round - once we get bottling!. |
|
|
 |
Double
Award Winner
Bee-Head
4.6% ABV |
Availability:
May - September Honey coloured ale gently flavoured with pure
Sussex Honey but balanced with a gentle biscuit edge. |
|
The
biscuit edge prevents the honey from
becoming too overpoweringly
sweet.
The name Bee-Head has a double
meaning
and is a bit of a pun. Whilst referring to the
honey in the beer, it
also refers to a certain
execution method popular in the 17th Century,
but
not with regal victims, obviously.

Smoked Ale
4.7% ABV |
Availability:
November - March A derivation of Ginger Nol. Brewed without the
ginger leaves this beer with a deep and satisfying smokey flavour. Deeply
warming for the long cold winter nights. |
|
As this is Ginger No. 1 without the ginger we
decided to call it Smokey Nol.
Whilst the explanation for the name Ginger
Nol holds together, we are unaware at this time as to any smokey attributes
Oliver Cromwell may have had!
Having decided to change the name of Ginger Nol to Ginger No. 1, (see above)
we have now decided to change the name of this beer also - it is now simply
called Smoked Ale. |
|
|
 |
Winter Warrant
4.8% ABV |
Availability:
November - March Very dark, rich ruby colour. Full bodied, deep
intensity of coffee/chocolate/nutty flavours. |
|
Name inspired by the 'Warrant of Execution'
for
Charles I - a copy of which is in
The
King's Head, where the brewery is based.
Most of the signatures on the warrant were
collected in 1648 after
Charles I was over-thrown
and imprisoned by Oliver Cromwell. The final
signatures were hurriedly added on
January 29th, the day before Charles I
execution.
(Must have got it with that clue!) |
|
|
 |
Award Winner
Gold Angel
5.0% ABV |
Availability:
Occasional
Gold coloured, medium bodied with a light malt
and citrus hop character. |
|
Charles I minted a 'Gold Angel' coin in 1644.
On
the reverse was his 'Declaration' to the
people - see how nicely that links
in with
Declaration Ale?
