Original

3.9% ABV

Chestnut coloured standard bitter with a pleasing balance of malt and hop makes this a good, reliable trusted brew. Our very first brew, hence the name - We were forced to be more imaginative with the later beers having used up the obvious one on the very first brew!

Deep Mahogany, full  bodied but mild drinking old style ale. The first brew to use the current season's hops from our local hop farm in Burwash.

Brewed to raise money for the Royal British Legions Poppy Appeal and recognised by them as an official fund raiser.

OK, a recurring theme of raising money by drinking, but this one started it and it's importance should not be underestimated.

Three Threads

4.3% ABV

Deep brown, full bodied with a deep, complex flavour.

Takes a bit of explaining, this one.... An 18th Century custom for mixing three types (or Threads) of beer - Mild, Stale and Pale - into one tankard.

We have tried to achieve this in a single brew and not by blending three different existing brews.

Almost impossible to categorise, but we call it a Mild!

SIBA S. E. Region Beer Competition 2007 Paddock Wood Hop Farm

Signature

4.4% ABV

Very pale, light crisply refreshing ale with a pleasing bitter back taste.

Our second brew (see, much more imaginative name and quite apt really, as it is our most popular beer - our Signature brew, in fact).

Name inspired by the signatures on the 'Warrant of Execution' for Charles I which was ratified prior to his execution in January 1649.

(It doesn't say specifically on this website where the name 1648 Brewing Co. ltd. comes from, but this is a clue).

Duel Varierty of Hops

NHA 'Beauty of Hops' Competition 2004.

Saint George

4.5% ABV

Chestnut/amber brown, traditional style, full bodied English Ale.

First brewed in 2006 for Saint George's Day (you might have guessed that). Remember, a Patron Saint is available every day, not just on 23rd April (Yes, that is Saint George's Day), so our Saint George beer is also available all year round.

All Year

Bee-Head

4.6% ABV

Honey coloured ale gently flavoured with pure Sussex Honey but balanced with a gentle biscuit edge.

The biscuit edge prevents the honey from

becoming too overpoweringly sweet.

The name Bee-Head has a double meaning and is a bit of a pun. Whilst referring to the honey in the beer, it also refers to a certain execution method popular in the 17th Century, but not with regal victims, obviously.

(Another clue!)

Availability:

May - September

Ginger Nol

4.7% ABV

Deep amber colour, an unusual blend of smoked malted barley and fresh root ginger creates an amazingly complex but satisfying flavour.

All depends whether you like your consumables smoked and infused with ginger, of course!

Ginger Nol (Not Ginger No 1 - it's an L, not the number 1). Oliver Cromwell was a red head, believe it or not. Ginger, for the red hair, and Nol, which means lump or stump - loosely translated meaning head - simple! (Nol was also an old nickname for Oliver).

(Yes, that is another clue to the brewery name - clues coming thick and fast now!)

Availability:

November - March

Winter Warrant

4.8% ABV

Very dark, rich ruby colour. Full bodied, deep intensity of coffee/chocolate/nutty flavours.

Name inspired by the 'Warrant of Execution' for Charles I - a copy of which is hanging above the fire place in The King's Head, where the brewery is based.

Most of the signatures on the warrant were collected in 1648 after Charles I was over-thrown and imprisoned by Oliver Cromwell. The final signatures were

hurriedly added on January 29th, the day before Charles I execution.

(Must have got it with that clue!)

Availability:

November - March

Gold Angel

5.0% ABV

Gold coloured, medium bodied with a light malt and citrus hop character. Charles I minted a 'Gold Angel' coin in 1644. On the reverse was his 'Declaration' to the people - see how nicely that links in with Declaration Ale?

(The final clue)
